monster love

So I took Jess Hutch's pattern from Knitty, Kate the Kitten in Britches, and modified it into this loveable monster who is such a pleasure to hold in my lap and pet. My baby boy is turning a year old today, and this is my gift to him. I've had this blue Moda Dea Eden for ages and it wanted to be a monster...

About halfway through the body he told me he wanted to be named Dave. I didn't ask, I just said alrighty. He's mostly worked in various acrylic yarns from the 70's that I scored from my mother-in-law. I tried to give him two eyes although he told me that his depth perception wasn't good and it would only be a cosmetic thing-- it wouldn't help him any. He was much happier with the one eye. Pictures don't do him justice, but hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to get some good shots of him in daylight. I was just too freaked out that I had finished him to wait until tomorrow to post.

You know guys, Jess Hutch makes me want to start designing my own toys. I think I'm about ready-- after all, I made those little nobbly things on Dave's head ALL BY MYSELF.

That is sooooo cute! How hard was the modification?

Easy! Basically, I just used the Moda Dea held with a strand of DK for the fuzzy parts, and size 7 DPN's cause that's what I had. I made the legs longer and the stripes different. The nobbly things on his head were simple-- I used size 3 dpn's for them with some Lamb's Pride Worsted and went as follows:
CO 9 sts. divide evenly onto dpn's.
k 11 rounds.
round 12: (increases done by knitting into front and back, or kfb) k1, kfb, k2, kfb, k2, kfb, k1.
round 13: k all sts.
round 14: (this is the only weird part and was sort of a bitch to do) bind off one st, then m1, bind off, m1, etc, all the way around, to make the end fluted.
His eye is felt pieces.
If I had him to do all over again I'd make his legs even longer. I'm trying to find some way to jury rig a little bag of rice in my creatures' feet to weigh them down and make them floppier.
Probably more details than you'll ever need :D

for the feet...put a marble in each one, wrapped up in stuffing of course :D or two, if just one isn't quite enough!

and this little guy rocks!

The thought crossed my mind, but the only marbles in this house are in the fish tank heh... but in the future, I'm going to experiment with that. Good idea! and thanks!

Your little alien fella' is so cute. I have knitted one doll before and think I will really enjoy doing toys in the future.

One thing I admire about that pattern is it mentions toy safety.

Happy first birthday to your son. ~smile~
